From WTSP.com:

Great Lakes Chemical Company has agreed to phase out two out of three widely-used brominated flames retardants. These chemicals are found in many household products including mattresses, couches and carpet pads.

Recent studies have shown the chemicals, which are supposed to prevent fires, cause developmental problems in test animals. Researchers aren't sure how the chemicals end up in people, but studies have shown North American women have the highest levels in the world. They test the breast milk of new mothers, because it's an easier way to test contaminated fat. Chemicals are known to build up in fat.

Doctors stress regardless of the findings, it's still important for mothers, including Angie to continue breastfeeding. They say most of a baby's exposure occurs during pregnancy and that the benefits of breastfeeding outweigh any potential risks.
