My husband & I are at wit's end with worry...Our seven month old daughter has been grabbing her own bottom while we change her. It wouldn't be a big deal, except she scratches herself so badly that she bleeds. We try to distract her by giving her a toy to play with while we are changing her to keep her hands busy, but that doesn't always do the trick. I am having a hard time because every time I change her, she either scratches the wounds open again, or the pressure from wiping her causes them to bleed. I have tried Desitin, Balmex, Bordeaux Butt Paste, & Aquaphor...nothing seems to work. I fear that these scratches may scar, & I do not want anyone to think we are not caring for our daughter properly. Is this normal? Any suggestions? Obviously, we are first-time parents...should this be something we call the doctor about? I asked at her last check-up appointment about this, & the doctor didn't seem too concerned, but WE ARE. Help!!

Hi,
No this is totally normal, don't worry about it. Have you tried keeping her nails short? Or have you tried putting mittens on her before you cahnge her, I know that sounds weird. Instead of mittens you could use socks on her hands. I would put some neosporin on the scrathes to eliminate infection.
Goodluck
