Hi,
Is it normal for a baby (3 wks old) to cry before/during a bowel movement? My baby seems to do this. He is breastfed. I think it may also be due to gas. Should I be concerned? Could what I be eating be affecting my milk and my baby?
thanks

My daughter(now 3 months) did this when she was first born. It lasted about 8 weeks. It worried and concerned us a lot, but our pediatrician says its nothing to worry about. Babies aren't used to the feeling of a bowel movement and they dont have very strong abdominal muscles so all of these feelings are new to them. I guess it scares them because its not something they felt all the time. Our daughter finally got used to it and she no longer cries during a BM. So I guess you just have to wait it out.

What helped our daughter was rubbing her back and talking softly to her while rocking her. It seemed to help calm her down quite a bit.
Hope this helps!

Hi,
This happens sometimes because it may be hurting your little one when he poops. It will get better as his system gets used to it more. If it continues for too long ask your ped about it.
